Nothing is more inspiring than where I live in the Cornish countryside. Sitting on a cliff top bench amongst the wildflowers, gazing at the setting sun on the ocean horizon.
This robe is made from vintage Matka silk - a non-violent method of producing silk that does not harm the precious silk moths that produce it. This method is used by only two farms in the whole world. Making it a very rare and special material indeed (although I wish all silk was produced this way!).
Instead of boiling and killing the innocent moths in their cocoon stage to obtain the silk fibres which is how mainstream silk is produced, they are left to live out their full life cycle and the discarded waste product from their abandoned cocoons is then turned into this sumptuous fabric here. It has a beautiful almost linen-like quality to it, quite different from the harmful regular method, and feels lovely and drapey on the skin.
I sourced this particular fabric from a vintage store in Plymouth and then dyed and hand painted it with non-toxic paints and dyes.
Each robe is a completely unique work of art taking up to two weeks to make and can be worn or displayed on a wall as pictured here in your own home. Comes with its own Certificate of Authenticy.
